Nouns

A Noun is a naming word. It is the name of a person, animal, place, thing, or feeling.

The nouns are in Bold in the following sentences:

  1. Louise collected the parcel.

  1. My dog Spot sleeps in the kennel.

  1. The river flowed quickly to the sea.

  1. Her happiness was overwhelming.

Nouns can be singular, one or plural, more than one - Dog, dogs.

Nouns have different ways of changing to the plural form:

singular plural
boy boys
man men
lady ladies
tomato tomatoes
knife knives
sheep sheep


Nouns can be divided into four groups.

Proper nouns name a particular person or place and begin with a capital letter -

Saturday, Jason, Australia

Common nouns are names common to all people or things of the same kind -

woman, boy, month, suburb, tree, cat

Collective nouns name a collection of people or things -

team, pack, group, crowd, navy (a collection of sailors)

Abstract nouns name feelings and ideas -

pain, freedom, joy, sorrow
