Prepositions

Prepositions relate one thing to another and are always followed by a noun or pronoun.

Prepositions often refer to the position of things.

The cat is on the bed.

The ball is under the bed.

Jana is in bed.

The prepositions on, under and in all refer to the bed and show the relationship between the cat, the ball and Jana to the bed.

Some common prepositions include:

in, on, up, under, over, across, behind, past, down, near, into, at, on top, next to, of, in between.

Prepositional phrases begin with a preposition.

Remember that phrases do not contain a verb.

They travelled towards the city

The woman in the red hat is over there.

Some prepositions can also be adverbs.

Remember that prepositions are always followed by a noun or pronoun and relate one thing to another.

I was behind ...................................................... adverb

I was behind the trees ........................................... preposition

They walked around ............................................. adverb

They walked around the block.................................. preposition
